One Story Inc
Who They Are: An award-winning non-profit publisher, they seek to support short-form writers through publication, education, community, and mentorship. They have over 15,000 readers and send work to top best-of anthologies like Pushcart and Best American.
What They Publish: They publish one short story each month between 3,000 and 8,000 words. They’re looking for strong works of literary fiction, any style or subject matter, that leaves readers feeling satisfied. You can read an excerpt of this month’s publication on their website
What They Pay: $500 flat rate plus 25 contributor copies

Ninth Letter
Who They Are: An award-winning, regarded literary magazine published biannually by the Creative Writing Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who are dedicated to publishing excellent original writing.
What They Publish: Along with their special online edition (see previous blog), they are also accepting submissions for their spring print edition. There is no fee if you submit during November and December, otherwise it’s $3 per submission. They accept previously unpublished works of fiction and nonfiction up to 8,000 words and 3-6 poems totaling no more than 10 pages.
What They Pay: $25 per printed page (max $150) plus 2 complimentary issues

Split Lip Magazine
Who They Are: A print and online publication, they publish an online edition once a month and a print edition once a year. They’re goal is to uplift inclusive, voice-driven work that includes a pop-culture twist. You can read their online editions on their website for free. They allow fee-free submissions during the months of January, March, May, August, September, November.
What They Publish: They’re looking for voice-driven, modern work with a pop culture twist. They accept previously unpublished fiction up to 3,000 words, memoirs up to 2,000 words, one poem, and flash fiction up to 1,000 words.
What They Pay: $50
Deadline: Submissions open year-round, except during July
