Camel Press

Who they are: “Camel Press is a feisty little publisher with a mission: to be your trusted purveyor of popular literature—the stuff that makes you lie in the sun too long and read in bed until the cock crows, the urban chickens start clucking, or your neighbor leaves for her 6 am shift. We snap up the good stuff that slips by the big guys, the publishers who are too worried about photogenic authors and the bottom line to care what’s between the pages.”

What they publish: Manuscripts in genre fiction: mystery/suspense, cozy mystery, mystery thrillers, romantic suspense and romance (contemporary and historical). We also consider general fiction, historical fiction and westerns, particularly if you have a strong promotional plan.

Word Count: They prefer the word count to be between 70,000 and 100,000, but books between 50,000 and 70,000 words will still be considered.

What to submit: The first 50 consecutive pages of your manuscript.

Coffeetown Press

Who they are: “Coffeetown Press has been publishing the finest fiction and nonfiction since 2005.  We publish memoirs, literary fiction, academic nonfiction, historical nonfiction, and literary mysteries.”

What they publish: Manuscripts in nonfiction, including memoir, literary fiction and historical fiction. Most of our memoirs concern growing up in other cultures or have a strong theme that will appeal to a specific audience. They only consider literary fiction with a strong story and a distinctive voice.

Word Count: They prefer the word count to be between 70,000 and 100,000, but books between 50,000 and 70,000 words will still be considered.

What to submit: The first 50 consecutive pages of your manuscript.

Bella Books

Who they are: Bella Books publishes fiction for and about women-loving-women. More than one hundred of its catalog titles have been shortlisted or have won Lambda Literary Awards or Golden Crown Literary Society Awards, and in 2004 it won the Lambda Literary Foundation’s Independent LGBT Press Award.

What they publish: They are interested in acquiring manuscripts that tell captivating and unique stories across all genres—including romance, mystery, thriller, paranormal, etc. They want their books to reflect and celebrate the diversity of our lesbian, queer, bisexual, and gender non-conforming community—in all our glorious shapes, sizes and colors.

Word Count: They recommend at least 60,000 words or more but there is not set minimum or maximum word count.

What to submit: Full manuscript.

Is your work ready for submission?

Just because you don’t need an agent and can submit your manuscript immediately doesn’t mean these are free tickets to publishing success.

If the first thing the editors look at as your manuscript, that manuscript better be up to industry standards and catch their eye from the get-go. Even one stray comma or clumsy sentence could get your work tossed in the slush pile.

If you want to submit with confidence, we recommend running your work by a professional first. Our team of coaches and publishing-industry experts can help you prepare your work for submission.

You can sign up for our five page review here to get feedback and professional editing on your work so it’s ready to publish.
